December 6, 2018 young girls from across Greater Cleveland participated in a Literacy Luncheon with  actress, singer and author Keke Palmer.  Palmer is best known for her leading role in Akeelah and the Bee, however she has starred in numerous movies, appeared as Cinderella on Broadway, written and produced many songs, was the lead character in her own series, True Jackson, VP, on the Disney Channel, and is the author of I Don’t Belong to You.  The girls who attended are participants in single gender literacy programming in Maple Heights, Warrensville Heights, South Euclid, and Cleveland Schools.

Ms. Palmer took time greeting the girls, taking selfies, and signing books and t-shirts.  She spoke with them, sharing lessons that she has learned from her career and life.  She encouraged the girls to remember that they are special and beautiful, and to not let anyone stop them from being who they are.  She shared obstacles that she has faced and overcome with the message to the girls that when there is an obstacle in the way “turn yourself into silly putty and get to shape shifting.”

Keke then took time to answer questions from the audience.  Questions ranged from how she became an actress to who her inspiration is.  Each girl received a copy of Keke Palmer’s book I don’t Belong to You: Quiet the Noise and Find Your Voice.

This event was made possible through a partnership with Saving Our Daughters and MyCom.
