South Euclid MyCom Community Partner ProvidesOpportunities for Northeast Ohio Youth

South Euclid’s Mercury Theatre Company’s nationally-ranked The Junior Company was recognized for 7 awards at the 2021 Musical Theatre Competitions of America. This year’s competition was held virtually, with groups competing online from all over the United States. Members of The Junior Company, made up of students grades 6th through12th from 19 different schools, took home:

  • Third Place in Advanced Ensemble Production for their interpretation of Stephen Sondheim’s masterpiece Merrily We Roll Along.
  • Third Place in Advanced Musical Revue for their original revue What If: The Musicand Lyrics of Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey.
  • In addition, Junior Company Senior Emma Grace (EG) Canzano was awarded FirstPlace in Senior Vocal Performance for her rendition of “I’d Rather Be Me” fromMean Girls: The Musical
  • Senior Ethan Peterson, Shining Star CLE 2020 recipient, took home Second Place in Senior Vocal Performance and was selected to perform in a masterclass withBroadway veteran Christopher Hanke.
  • Peterson and Canzano were joined by Senior James Newton with his award forFourth Place in Senior Vocal
  • Freshman Stanley Niekamp was awarded Fourth Place in Freshman Vocal Performance, and Canzano took home an additional prize for her Third Place in Senior Monologue

About Mercury Theatre Company’s The Junior Company

 The Junior Company, now in its 5th year, is a nationally-recognized, pre-collegiate training program for students aged 6th through 12th grades, created to prepare students for a career in the performing arts. This audition-based program, led by Mercury Theatre Company Artistic Director Pierre Braultand Education Director Aubrey Fink, offers students the opportunity to both perform and develop their craft while receiving instruction from a team of industry professionals. Company members receive coaching in numerous acting techniques, music theory and vocal performance, and company-wide dance training. The Junior Company produces two fully-staged musicals a year, as well as competing at national performing arts competitions such as iTheatrics’ Junior Theatre Festival, The National Performing Arts Festival, and Musical TheatreCompetitions of America.

This marks the second national recognition in 2021 for The Junior Company, following their award-winning production of Disney’s High School Musical Jr. at iTheatrics’ JuniorTheatre Festival in January, where they received awards for Excellence in Dance and All Festival Individual Performance for company member Ethan Peterson. The Junior Company will be mounting a full production of their award-winningMerrily We Roll Along in-person in early May of this year.
