The U.S. Government, in the December 2018 STEM Strategic Plan, supports our thinking that STEM ecosystems are pathways for improving STEM literacy, ensuring a strong workforce and global competitiveness for all. They are an important means to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in a thriving STEM workforce. TIES supports new and existing STEM Learning Ecosystems with planning, design, implementation, training, and sustainability strategies.

Many communities lack access to consistent, relevant, and meaningful STEM opportunities and experiences. In particular, communities of color often don’t see themselves in STEM careers and this lack of representation can be internalized as “I don’t belong there”. Daniel will guide us through examples of how communities are dismantling the barriers that prevent families from engaging with STEM and break down the walls to keep misconceptions about what STEM in practice looks like.

Daniel Aguirre is a passionate community organizer who has been engaging with diverse communities in meaningful and relevant experiences for over a decade. His work centers on elevating community voices, perspectives, and expertise to co-develop sustainable collaborative efforts. As a STEM Consultant for TIES (Teaching Institute for Excellence in STEM), he helps to expand access to STEM experiences and opportunities for communities not often represented across STEM careers. In all efforts, Daniel prioritizes inclusive practice, diverse representation, accessible entry points, and dismantling inequities.

Attendees will walk away with a better understanding of:

  • Entry points for STEM engagement
  • Why representation matters
  • Actions you can take to engage your local community in relevant and meaningful STEM experiences
