During Fall 2022, MyCom hosted David Lukwesa from Pact Zambia in Zambia, Africa. David worked with MyCom to work through the objectives of his Community Action Project: My Community My Responsibility Initiative.
After completing his Fellowship with the MyCom Network, David returned to Zambia to use some of the community development techniques he gained from the MyCom Network to enact his project.
To support the successful conclusion of David’s project, MyCom is seeking funding support for My Community My Responsibility.
To build household capacities aimed at improving health outcomes by preventing new HIV infections among priority and key populations (AYPs) most at risk of acquiring HIV through promotion and ehancement of Responsible Parenthood by means of (1) media campaigns, (2) community and stakeholder engagements, (3) activism, and (4) policy advocacy in the Kasama District and all the surrounding areas of rural Northern Zambia.
Young people ages 10-24 years and their parents and caregivers older than 25 years from underprivilged households in the communities of the Kasama District.
A community that adopts HIV prevention practices and makes behavioral changes that last beyond the life of the project.
The funds raised for the project will be used to transport young adults and families to Neighborhood Community planning meetings, radio programming to promote using Prep, PEP, and condoms, educational literature, and project evaluation activities.
My key takeaway from the US experience is the cutting-edge networking and partnership that civil society organizations practice when serving their respective communities. No single organization does its work in silos, everyone belongs to a certain network. This doesn’t happen in Africa. Instead of networking, we compete and downplay each other. This is something I will labor to foster in my Country.
MyCom will enact our mission with race and equality at the forefront of our work as we always have. We will use our thought-leadership, funding, advocacy, and network to redesign service delivery. Together we will rethink infrastructure and create solutions that eliminate access to healthcare, cyclical poverty, access to quality education, housing stability, and other barriers that have impacted black lives.
