MyCom congratulates Brian Mitchell, a member of the Shaker Heights Youth Council, for winning second place in the high school division of East View United Church of Christ’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest. He was awarded a $250 scholarship at services on January 15.
Brian is a junior at Shaker Heights High School, where he is on the football and track teams. In addition to being on the youth council at Shaker Heights Youth Center, he is a member of the MAC Scholars Program and active in Young Men Growing.
The theme of this year’s essay contest was “What can be done to eradicate poverty in the USA”.

Together we will rethink infrastructure and create solutions that eliminate access to healthcare, cyclical poverty, access to quality education, housing stability, and other barriers that have impacted black lives.
